If there is one thing that social media has been helpful to society, that would be giving opportunities for ordinary people to shine from the limelight without the help of the press.
A man who identified himself as James Manger de la Cruz has been walking for 20 days from Baler, Aurora to Umingan, Pangasinan. He is a native from La Trinidad, Benguet province. Because his boss, who he mentioned as “Boyet Pascual”, did not pay his salary, James was forced to walk home for several kilometers.
He was found by the uploader, Maria Elena Acodesin Gonzales, in Umingan, Pangasinan. She took photos of the poor guy and recorded a video hoping that his situation might reach his relatives.
For 15 hours, the album composed of 4 photos and a video has been shared more than 70 thousand times. It also gathered more than 15 thousand Facebook reactions and 114 comments.
While the uploader heartily helped James not only by broadcasting his situation online and also feeding and clothing him, the comment section was filled with a mixture of negative reactions.
Some netizens commented that the guy was actually pretending to be poor and goes from place to place to take advantage of people’s sympathy. Some suggested that it would be better that he will be turned over to the police to verify if he is not making stories.
Regardless of the truth of the matter, one thing is sure though — the uploader’s respond to the James’ need is an act of kindness that every human should emulate.
