Filipinos make a big deal out of pageants. Every Ms. Universe coronation night, the whole nation stops to witness and support their own candidate. Whatever Ms. Philippines says and does, it will leave a long lasting impress among the Filipino people.
This year, the Philippines hosts the 65th Ms. Universe pageant. Having Ms. Pia Wurtzbach winning the crown last year, the pressure is strong for this year’s Ms. Philippines, Maxine Medina.
What surprised everyone is when Ms. Philippines used an interpreter during the question and answer portion. For years, Philippines did not use any interpreter because English is also a national language part of the education curriculum. However, things did not go that well.
Ms. Philippines’ interpreter translated the question to Tagalog, but she answered in English. Thus, the interpreter need not to translated whatever she said anymore.
The internet exploded by this scenario feeling the awkward situation of the interpreter. He is like a person who is there but not needed at all. This gave birth to the interpreter meme. Here are some notable examples:

Some people blame the interpreter why Maxine did not reach a higher spot. There seems to be a mistake in the translation. The question was, “What is the most significant CHANGE you’ve seen in the world in the Last ten Years.”. The interpreter uses the tagalog word “PANGYAYARI” instead of “PAGBABAGO”. “Pangyayari” means “event” or “happening”. “Pagbabago” is the more appropriate term for “change”.
However, Ms. Maxine Medina don’t deserve any bashing. She made it to the Top 6 and that is not bad at all. She deserve the praise not hate. She represented the country well. We need to hug like Pia Wurtzbach did.
