As you may heard, Google is on the verge of experimenting driverless taxi cabs on the road. It is using laser-based technology to navigate the area and avoid bumping other objects. Since, it aims to serve people in the future, to guarantee safety is the prime concern.
However, a traffic enforcer from Mountain View, California noticed that the Google Car was “over cautious”. It was too slow for travelling at 24 miles per hour. The relatively slow speed on the self-drive car jammed traffic on its lane because other drivers were patiently waiting behind it.
The car was travelling on the 35 miles per hour zone. Google programmed their prototype to travel at 25 miles per hour at most for safety purposes. The traffic officer suggested that Google should program their prototypes travel on a faster speed on some selected fast lane roads.
Google, together with other researchers, admits that to their driverless cars to work efficiently on a road both shared by humans and bots is one of their greatest challenges the firm is facing. So far, with all the tests they conducted, they never got a traffic ticket.
Most of the traffic accidents are caused by human error. The soon arrival of bot-cars is hoping to change that image.
